Having lived through the devastation that Alzheimers wreaks in the one you love for over 10 years, future pain should have been easier to manage? After all I had handled the challenge of her getting dangerously stuck half way up a staircase; reassured her when a spark of awareness caused great fright; or been personally heartbroken as her capacity to read or write disappeared.
